Gary Winick, the 49-year-old director behind "Bride Wars" and "Letters to Juliet," has died, following a battle with brain cancer, according to multiple reports.
In addition to his mainstream credits, Winick boasted a résumé filled with independent fare as well. He produced and directed 2002's "Tadpole," a breakout coming-of-age hit at Sundance, and produced 2003's "Pieces of April," for which Patricia Clarkson received a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination. Other production credits include Richard Linklater's "Tape" and Steve Buscemi's "Lonesome Jim." Winick also directed "13 Going on 30" in 2004 and a live-action adaptation of "Charlotte's Web," which grossed more than $140 million worldwide in 2006. In total, according to TheWrap, he produced 19 films.
The filmmaker's death was first made public via Twitter, in an update from producer Matt Dentler, who wrote, "Gary Winick died today. Too late to make the Oscars tribute, but way too early. He leaves behind a legacy of supporting indie film and NYC."
"He was suffering from brain cancer for quite some time, and it ultimately metastasized throughout his body," his manager, Rosalie Swedlin, told The Hollywood Reporter. "What's remarkable is that after his first surgery, he was able to direct 'Letters to Juliet.' It was a battle that we thought he had won, and ultimately they just didn't get it all."
A memorial service is in the works and people will be asked to make charitable donations. "Gary was an incredibly important figure in the indie movement," Swedlin said. "He will be missed."

Ever wonder what you might get Justin Bieber for his 17th birthday? Well, the pop star has the answer. In honor of his big day, he's working with the nonprofit Charity: Water, requesting that his fans donate money to the cause that brings clean water to developing nations.
"I have had an incredible year and it is all due to the fans helping me live my dream. I'm turning 17 years old on Tuesday [March 1] and have so much to be grateful for!" Bieber wrote on the charity's website. "So this year, I really want my birthday to be all about helping others. Instead of asking for gifts, I'm asking friends, family and fans to consider donating $17 for my 17th birthday to help make a change," he continued. "One hundred percent of all donations go directly to building clean water projects in developing countries with Charity: Water, and we'll be able to see photos and GPS of the projects we helped build!"
The teen star then gave his fans some facts about why they should get involved. "Together, we've made a big difference for many causes. Did you know that about 4,500 kids die each day from waterborne disease?" he shared. "By building clean water projects for villages that need them, we can prevent this! I want to make my birthday matter this year — let's make it so more kids can grow up to have a 17th birthday like me. Join me to make a change.
"I'm really so grateful for my family, friends and fans — and I believe we can do something big to help bring clean water to people in need," he added. "Even if you don't have $17 to give, I just ask you to go out in your community and try and make a positive difference. Even the smallest act of kindness can go a long way. Thanks and God Bless! #makeachange."
As it turns out, his call has already been answered by his fans. Charity: Water tweeted, " Thanks to all you Beliebers, we hit $7 million raised on mycharity: water today! #makeachange."

Karen Rodriguez Creates Bilingual Stir on American Idol
If most American Idol viewers agree that Pia Toscano put on the best semifinalist performance last night among the remaining 12 women, these same fans would say that Karen Rodriguez put on the most interesting.
Perhaps even the most scandalous, according to THG readers.
The New York native threw in a twist to her rendition of Mariah Carey's "Hero," singing almost half of the song in Spanish. This actually riled up a few respondents in our blog, who called Karen out for daring to be different.
Watch the performance now and sound off: Do you see anything wrong with the inclusion of a Spanish verse?

Kristen Stewart's 'Breaking Dawn' Vampire 'Scared' Elizabeth Reaser
'Twilight' co-star tells MTV News, 'I thought, 'This might not end well. She's looking pretty pissed right now.' '

PARK CITY, Utah — Ever since Kristen Stewart spilled the beans at the People's Choice Awards that she had been filming "Breaking Dawn" as a vampire that day, it's all we can think about when we get the chance to talk to one of her "Twilight Saga" co-stars.
Elizabeth Reaser, who plays Esme Cullen in the film franchise, teased at the Sundance Film Festival this week that there have been some crazy vampire scenes on set recently.
"There's been some really cool stuff in the Cullen house with Bella," Reaser revealed to MTV News. "There's been some interesting transformations happening."
Sounds to us like director Bill Condon has been filming the famous "Breaking Dawn" birthing scene, and that Reaser got a chance to see Bella's transformation into a vampire. Producer Wyck Godfrey already shared that the birthing scene will be shown from Bella's perspective to keep with the film's PG-13 rating, but as Reaser witnessed the whole scene unfold, what was her impression of Stewart's transformation?
"She scared me a little bit on Thursday, I'll be honest with you," Reaser said. "Because when vampires are newborns, they're stronger than any other vampires, so for a second there I thought, 'This might not end well. She's looking pretty pissed right now.' It was great."
Reaser's praise of Stewart's performance as vampire Bella matches with what co-stars Robert Pattinson and Peter Facinelli had to say about it at the Golden Globes. Pattinson told MTV News it felt like Stewart "wanted to do it the entire time."
"It's really funny, it's like a completely different environment on set when she's a vampire and when she's not," he said. "I think she's going to do it really well."
In the books, Bella becomes much more confident after transforming into a vampire, so it's fitting that Stewart is coming into her own with the role. Facinelli jokingly credited vampire contact lenses as the real reason Stewart is doing so much better.
"She's doing really well. She looks fantastic," Facinelli raved. "For some reason, once they put those contact lenses in, you look very statuesque."

'The King's Speech' Actors, Director Overjoyed By Oscar Nods
'Not used to this much joy, or this much champagne at this hour,' best-actor nominee Colin Firth said in a statement.

"The King's Speech" leads all films with 12 nominations for next month's 83rd Academy Awards. The Tom Hooper-directed flick scored Oscar nods for Best Picture, Actor in a Leading Role, Actor in a Supporting Role and Actress in a Supporting Role, to name a few.
The movie's lead actor, Colin Firth, expressed his excitement over his nod in a statement to MTV News. "Currently celebrating with my colleagues three feet above the ground," said Firth, who also received a best-actor nomination last year for "A Single Man." "Not used to this much joy, or this much champagne at this hour."
Firth also spoke to the "Today" show shortly after the nominations were announced early Tuesday morning (January 25). "It seems like I was fired out of a cannon this time last year," Firth said about his Actor in a Leading Role nod. "And now it's like I'm orbiting Pluto."
And after receiving news of her Best Supporting Actress nomination, Helena Bonham Carter's statement to MTV News was equally ecsstatic. "Of course, I am thrilled to receive an Oscar nomination," she said. "As my 3-year-old daughter said, 'Yay!' I couldn't put it any better myself."
His co-star Geoffrey Rush opened up about his Actor in a Supporting Role nom to MTV News. "As an Australian, I'm as excited to be recognized and honored by the Academy as my character must have been when his London speech-therapy business flourished when the future King of England happened to pop by one day," Rush said in a statement. "This story has struck such a rich resonant chord with audiences of all ages, which is very exciting — to have your work honored by your industry peers is even better."
Hooper, who picked up a nod in the Directing category, also issued a statement to MTV. "I am absolutely overwhelmed by the twelve Oscar nominations for 'The King's Speech.' I am so grateful to the Academy," Hooper said. "I am incredibly proud of my extraordinary cast and crew. This is a day I will remember for the rest of my life."
Composer Alexandre Desplat was grateful for his Original Score nod, too. "Writing the music for 'The King's Speech' has been a delight, and I thank our brilliant director, Tom Hooper, for offering us and the audience such an inspiring and beautiful film," he said in a statement. "I also wish to congratulate all the other talented nominees for our movie."

Alec Baldwin to Replace Keith Olbermann?
Amid the shocking news that MSNBC fired Keith Olbermann late last week, the network is already looking to find a new marquee star for its growing brand.
Their ultimate wish list is topped by none other than Alec Baldwin.
"He's already part of the NBC family, has a huge fan base and is very respected for his long term passions for politics," a network source says of the actor.
FUNNIEST HOST EVER: Could Alec Baldwin be the new Keith Olbermann?
Alec, whose right-leaning media exec delivers epic 30 Rock quotes on a weekly basis, has expressed political aspirations before, especially lately.
"Yes, it's something that I'm very, very interested in," Alec told CNN's Parker Spitzer when asked if politics was a "game" he wanted to enter.
But could Baldwin really replace Olbermann after his tumultuous exit?
For now, it seems like he's happy where he is ... for the most part.
"To quit (acting) now when it really feels good would be an enormously difficult thing to do. However, I do believe that people want to believe that someone who deeply cares about the middle class ... would like to seek public office."
A friend of Alec's tells me that if he opts out of politics (and acting, of course), a career as a cable news opinion host would suit him perfectly.
In fact, he could enter the arena without actually running for office.
"He's brilliant on camera and honestly cares about news and fighting for the rights of everyday people," a source says. "Don't count him out."
"There was a time when everyone said Alec would never do a sitcom. Those same people say he'd never run for office or host a political show."
What do you think? Would you watch Alec?

Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries: Moving In Together?
How serious are things getting between Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries? The couple is shopping for high-end video equipment together.
Just kidding.
But insiders do tell E! News that Kim is "moving permanently" to New York City "to be closer to Kris," who is hunting for a new apartment in preparation for his basketball team's move to Brooklyn in two years.
We're very sorry, NYC.
Sources claim Kardashian and Humphries were checking out a high-rise in Chelsea yesterday morning.
"He wants to live with Kim," a friend says of the Nets' power forward.
And why shouldn't he? With Kim in his life, Humphries is averaging career highs in points and rebounds this season. Also, she has very large breasts.
